SPIN BOWLERS EFFECTIVE
GOOD LAST-WICKET STAND (P.A.) DUNEDIN, March 17. Despite the efforts of later batsmen to retrieve the position a for a disastrous start, the Fijian touring’ cricket team was dismissed for 196 in the second innings of its match against Otago at Carisbrook yesterday, leaving the home side the winners by 46 runs. When play was resumed the Fijians required 243 runs for a win and had 31 runs showing for one wicket, but three wickets fell cheaply including that of Apted who was bowled by McArley from the first delivery hs received. Seven wickets were down for 112 when E. Cakabau joined his captain Snow and this pair added 40 before Groves separated them
E. Cakabau and Aria provided the liveliest batting of the innings in a last-wicket stand which added 29, Aria hitting two sixes in scoring 14 while Cakabau, who batted very soundly, was unbeaten with 47. The Fijians were never completely at home to the slow spin bowlers and Groves and Smith each took three wickets. Scores: —
