THREAT TO NANKING INCREASES

RED PLANS TO CROSS YANGTSE FEARED (N.Z.P.A. —Reuter— Copyright.) (H a , m .) SHANGHAI, March 15. All the Nationalist forces along- the Yangtse were alerted today to prevent the Communist forces from crossing to the south side of this vital central China river.

This precautionary measure followed the receipt of reports that the Communists had established, a “central headquarters” in Ycnchcng, about 200 miles north of the Kiangsu Provincial capital of Chinkiang preparatory to launching a drive to capture Yangtse ports and the Ross River. The Nationalist defences at all strategic points along the Yangtse, including Chinkiang, which is 30 miles north-east of Nanking, have been strengthened.

Meanwhile, crucial battles continue to be fought in Manchuria, Honan and Shantung.
