NO SHOALING FOUND

FAREWELL SPIT SURVEY (P.A.) WELLINGTON March. 16. The Minister of Marine, Mr. F. Ilackett, stated that soundings taken by the Government steamer Matai off Farewell Spit revealed no evidence of shoaling such as had been reported by the lightkeepers. There was a bank approximately three-quarters of a mile north of the lighthouse on which the least depth was three and a-quarter fathoms obtained at mean low water. This bank had always existed. All other soundings approaching the area and leaving it corresponding exactly with the charted depths.
