PETROL LIMITATION
TOURISTS IN AUSTRALIA
CAR TRAVEL DISCOURAGED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 15. In a statement on petrol allowances for visiting motorists in Australia the office of the High Commissioner for Australia in New Zealand says the supply position is such that ’ longdistance travel is being discouraged. The authorities were not prepared to grant special facilities for such as inter-State trips unless there were special circumstances. The present policy was to allow a quantity of petrol equivalent to double the private consumers’ monthly allowance for a period not exceeding three months where a vehicle was operated for pleasure. The present scale for private consumers was five gallons a month up to eight horse power, six for over eight to ten horse power, eight gallons for over 10 up to 14 horse power, 10 and over 14 up to 20 horse power, 11 over 20 up to 30 horse power, and 13 gallons over 30 horse power. In most cases applications by overseas visitors for business would be dealt with by several State fuel boards.
