OIL IN HARBOUR

REMOVAL COST £2BO SHIP’S MASTER FINED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March, 11. The estimated cost of cleaning up oil cast on Oriental Bay Beach, the Te Aro baths and the boat harbour over the week-end was £2BO. This information was given in the Magistrate’s Court when Edward Austin Kemp, the master of the Pacific Nomad, pleaded guilty to a charge of allowing oil to escape into Wellington Harbour on March 4. It was stated on behalf of the Master that the crew in refuelling a tank were unaware that it was connected to another which, in consequence, had overflowed. Mr. W. F. Stillwell, S.M. said that although the Court usually regarded this type of offence as serious, he would in view of the circumstances impose a fine of £25.

He adjourned the question of damages for a month until the cost of cleaning up the oil had been ascertain-
