BATAVIA’S GIFT
DUTCH FLOWER BULBS NEW ZEALAND PARKS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 11. Flowers from the most beautiful nurseries in Europe will bloom around Parliament Buildings and in the parks of Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill as a result of a graceful gesture by the Government of Dutch Overseas Territories at Batavia in recognition of the hospitality shown to war evacuees from Java by the New Zealand Government and the public. The Netherlands Charge d'Affaires, Dr. Arriens, stated today that the Ruahine, due in Wellington on April 9, was bringing in cold store 174 cases of hyacinths, tulips and narcissi bulbs that had been grown in Holland and would be distributed as follows: Wellington 20,000 hyacinths, 4000 tulips, 12,000 narcissi: Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill, 10,000 hyacinths, 2000 tulips and GOOO narcissi each.
It is expected that the bulbs will be planted as soon as they arrive. They should flower about the end of August or in September. It is expected that after their arrival M. Arriens will take the opportunity of officially handing a token of the gift to the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser.
