DROUGHT CONDITIONS

Sir.—l do not know if records were kept 60 Odd years ago as regards drought and other conditions. I can distinctly remember (and other elderly people would also) worse conditions than now, for many people bought clothes, as no water could be spared for washing. The town, of course, had no water sunply then, and folks had to rely on wells, as tanks had long been empty. All water from basins, and from vegetable cleaning was saved, to be used for floors and finally put on treasured plants. The sun blazed for months and fierce westerlies blew, and stock died; and there was much fever. Going by school certificates it would have been in the early ’eighties. M. BLAIB.
