BETTER ROADS SOUGHT
BACK-COUNTRY FARMS STATE ASSISTANCE URGED (P.A.) ASHBURTON, March 10. Requests for improved road access to back-country runs were made by the Ashburton County Council to the Royal Commission on the Sheep Industry which sat here yesterday. The council expressed concern at the difficulty of maintaining access to some runs, the cost of the work being considerably - in excess of the rates collected. The council pointed out that there were IMOO fewer sheep being carried in the Rakaia Gorge than last year and this affected rating value. The council contended that the Government, which was the landlord of most runs, should pay all costs over and above rates less a deduction of a proportion for other services which runholders received. The chairman of the commission, Mr. R. H. White, agreed that there were difficulties in the district and said the commission would give full considerato the representations. Any recommendation. however, would have to be from a national standpoint.
