VISITING BANDS

WAIROA : DUNEDIN GISBORNE APPEARANCES Arrangements for two visits from outside bands are providing members of the Gisborne Home Guard Band with scope for organising activity, and a considerable amount of energy already has been put forth in co-ordinating plans with other district bodies. On Saturday, March 20, the Wairoa Band will visit Gisborne to take part with the Home Guard Band and the P.B. Highland Pipe Band in a demonstration which will include marching by teams of the Inter-house Sports Association.

Four Wairoa teams of girls will visit Gisborne for this demonstration, and three Gisborne teams are in training for the competition, which will be staged in connection with an amateur athletic meeting on the Childers Road Reserve.

On the following day the visiting bandsmen and girls' marching teams will be entertained on a bus trip around the district, and on the Sunday night a concert will be given by the combined bands, with the assistance of Gisborne artists.

For next month the Home _ Guard Band has the prospect of a visit from the Dunedin Ladies’ Brass Band, an organisation which took part with considerable credit in the recent band contest in Dunedin. An invitation to visit Gisborne was issued to the ladies’ band by Gisborne bandsmen, who also took part in the contest, and was accepted provisionally. In correspondence with the band’s manager, the Gisborne bandsmen have learned during the past few days that a tour of five North Island centres is proposed, and that Wellington, Palmerston North, Hasting and Napier have been communicated with.

Billeting for the 40 members of the band is the governing factor in arranging the tour apparently, and Mr. H. Dear has volunteered his services in obtaining a sufficient number of billets in Gisborne.
