MARAETAI IDLE
STOP-WORK MEETING DISPUTE AMONG MEN TRANSFER OF OFFICIAL (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 9. Workers at the huge Maraetai electrical development works at Mangakino are to hold a stop-work meeting today. All shifts ceased work at midnight last night. The extent of the hold-up will depend on the decision made at the meeting. The authorities hope that the delay will be only for 24 hours. The engineer in charge, Mr. J. T. Gilkison, said today that he hoped that the disruptive element would be defeated and work resumed at midnight tonight. He had nothing further to say at present. It is believed that the trouble, which it is stated has been working up to a pitch over some weeks has come to a head with the transfer of a union official, the leader of the dissatisfied element, to another job. The official refused to transfer, claiming victimisation.
One section of the workers has stated that it will strike indefinitely if the transfer is forced, and it is claimed that the other section will refuse to work with the complaining element if he remains.
