WHEREABOUTS A MYSTERY NOW 34 DAYS OVERDUE BRISBANE, March 9. Nothing further has been heard of the 83ft. ketch Taipan which was first reported overdue on February 16 on a trip from Brisbane to Cairns with 10 people aboard. It is now 34 days since she cleared Brisbane. Two partners in the syndicate owning the vessel, which has auxiliary power, are awaiting the ketch at Cairns but say they know nothing of her whereabouts. The department of Navigation asked the Townsville radio to broadcast a description of the ketch on February 21 and civil aircraft have also been asked to look out for her. The tanker British Marquesa, New Zealand bound, reported seeing a similar vessel near Piper Island, north of Portland Roads, on the east side of Cape York peninsula- “ The whole affair is too much of a mystery for my liking.” said the deputy-director of Navigation, Captain R. Moore. “Apart from this report we have not a clue to her whereabouts.
