HOLY TRINITY ORGAN

Sir,—lt is gratifying to learn that at long last we are to have a modern organ for Holy Trinity Church and it can be taken for granted Parishioners will rally to the call. While congratulating the vestry on their decision, may I tit the same time oiler some constructive suggestions and advice? Nearly always we look to the present and ignore the needs of the future. Why instal only a two-manual organ? Holy Trinity is worthy of a three-manual with its consequent vast improvement in colour. The great difference in performance is such that the j additional cost is well worth considering. It may be said that this can be j added later, but experience teaches that] this is rarely, if ever, done, apart from, the fact that additions are.usually very much more costly than an original job. Another point: Even if the vestry finally decide on a two-manual organ, it is most essential to remedy a very obvious fault before the job is installed. The published sketch shows most definitely that the console is in the wrong position. This should be entirely separate from the main body of the instrument, the obvious position being approximately at the end of the choir seats just alongside the chancel seats, i.e., either on the platform depicted by the Lectern or on the opposite side near the pulpit, No matter how good the organist (Holy Trinity is at present doubly fortunate in this respect), it is absurb to expect 100 per cent, efficiency in results if the choirmaster has his back towards the most important 50 per cent, of the choir, and a mirror is certainly unsatisfactory for the other 50 per cent.

s Church. Auckland, and St. Marys, New Plymouth, are excellent examples of the correct placing of the console. Let the vestry be guided by practical experience and not make the very bad error they appear to have made. Again congratulating the Vestry on their decision, “ORGANIST"
