TOOL SHED GUTTED

AWAPUNI ROAD FIRE HOUSE NARROWLY SAVED A grass fire which started in the Awapuni School grounds on Monday afternoon spread into the neighbouring property belonging to Mr. C. Carrington and before being extinguished gutted a large corrugated iron implement shed. Only through the strenuous efforts of the Gisborne Fire Brigade was the adjoining house saved. The brigade received the alarm at 1.37 o’clock and on arrival at the school found the fire had a good hold in the long dry grass in the school football field and the neighbouring paddock. Although strenuous efforts were made by the brigademen and other helpers to confine the flames to a small area, an 18ft by 10ft implement shed on Mr. Carrington’s property was gutted. Valuable shearing gear which was stored in the shed was ruined. The brigade hkd to run out 1700 ft of overland hose to reach the fire and it was only the bringing of the hose into play that saved a dwelling house near the shed. The pressure of water in the mains during the fire-fighting period was good.
