AMONG WORLD’S BEST
DUNEDIN SWIMMER (P.A.) WELLINGTON. March 9. The international ranking list of the world's leading swimmers in 1947 has just been received bv the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association and indicates that Ngaire Lane, Dunedin, who has been selected for the backstroke event, posses bright prospects of the 26 performances listed for the 100 metres backstroke. Only four are better than lmin. 17 sec., which Miss Lane returned in an unpaced Olympic trial which she made in December.
According to this list the five leading women backstroke swimmers in the world at the moment are Miss Harup (Denmark), lmin. 14sec.; Miss Novak (Hungary), .lmin. 15 8-10 sec.; Miss Gibson (England), lmin. losec.; Miss Gallaird (Holland), lmin. 16 5-10 sec.; and Miss Lane. lmin. 17sec.
As the performances in Europe are customarily registered in much shorter pools than are used in New Zealand, Miss Lane who is still improving must be regarded as possing good chances of being among the leading Olympic finalists.
