LICENSE REFUSED
IMPORTED KNITWEAR AVAILABLE U.K GOODS RETAILER BEWILDERED At least one Gisborne retailer was moved by the Government assurance that import licenses would be granted for British-made commodities found to be available. Goods were located, but now he has been informed by the Customs Department that “it is regretted that no license can be granted.” The retailer, when interviewed today, said he was bewildered by the situation. The trade had been told to secure any available goods they required from the United Kingdom on the understanding that licenses would be procurable. “In my case the orderamounted to a comparatively small sum, £N.Z.130, and involved knitted wear which has been in particularly short supply,” he said. "The goods were available for shipment from Glasgow within three weeks of my confirming the order.” This retailer said he had received a curt note from the Customs Department declining his application and giving him no explanation, and not even the right to halve his order.
