Theft of Coat and Bag
A Maori, Newton Crawford, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on each of two charges of theft, the sentences to be cumulative, bv Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court in Gisborne this week. The charges concerned the theft of an overcoat valued at £5 10s the property of Bertram Bartlett, a seaman on H.M.N.Z.S. Bellona and the theft of a suitcase valued at £1 5s TOd the property of Gordqn Angus McDonald from the Tarawhiti Kiwi Club's rooms last Saturday. Crawford pleaded not guilty. It was stated by Senior-Sergeant G. S. Norris that Crawford had been given the overcoat to hold and had then disappeared. He had been located and had led the police to a vacant section where the coat was secreted with the suitcase.
