PROTECTION OF FOOD

BREAD MUST BE WRAPPED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 17. “As it is essential that all possible measures be taken to protect foods against avoidable contamination, I have issued a notice which will be gazetted this week extending the bread wrapping requirements of the regulations under the Health Act to all districts throughout New Zealand, says a statement issued by the Minister of Health, Miss M. Howard.

“This means that no bread may be sold in .any shop unless it is properly wrapped in clean paper or other suitable material to prevent its coming in contact with human hands, or its contamination by dust or flies. “Previously these requirements were only in force in the districts of 12 local authorities. The notice does not apply to bread delivered direct from a bakery to a home consumer.

“There may be some difficulty in obtaining plentiful supplies of wrapping paper, but where supplies are scarce the wrapping of bread should take precedence over wrapping packages of food that are otherwise adequately protected against contamination.”
