£50,000 PAY-OUT
WEST COAST MINERS (P.A.) GREYMOUTH, Dec. 17. A new record pay-out at the Grey district State coal mines, which this year includes the Christmas holiday payments, totalled £50,000, surpassing last year’s record figures by almost £IO,OOO. There is only one unusual factor in the increase. On this occasion the Paparoa Coal Company’s former mine is included, it having been taken over by the State some months ago. There are few, if any, increases in the number of men employed at the mines. The increase is attributable mainly to the increases in the daily rates of pay for contract workers, which for holiday computation purposes has gone up from 30/2 to 33/- a day. A number of pay envelopes last week exceeded £6O. one reaching the maximum of £75, while the bulk of them were in the vicinity of £SO. The mines cease work on Friday next. They are to resume again on January 5.
