AUCKLAND BOOKMAKER £4070 TAKEN IN 18 DAYS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 16. The defendant’s office was fitted up for bookmaking with' a printing press and also a cyelostyling machine, two radios and a telephone, said Sub-Inspec-tor Daly in the Police Court today when Henry Clifton Sallery admitted bookmaking and was fined £2OO. A large quantity of betting material was seized by the police. It was stated that bets for 18 days’ racing from September 13 totalled more than £4070.
For the defendant, Mr. J. W. Terry said that some years ago Sallery was president of the Sportsman’s Association. He was then .one of the biggest bookmakers in Auckland, if not the whole Dominion. He gave lengthy evidence before the Gaming Commission. Of late he had done little more than keep a select clientele, hoping that bookmakers would be licensed to operate.
