CHILDREN POISONED

SANDWICHES SUSPECTED (11 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 17,
Nearly 100 children became violently ill on Saturday afternoon after attending a Christmas party at the primary school at Gosford, near Sydney. Doctors worked for two hours treating the children'. They said the children were suffering from ptomaine poison. ing.
There were extraordinary scenes in the schoolground as child after child collapsed. When the first half-dozen! children collapsed the teachers rushed to telephone doctors. A few minutes later nearly 100 children were groaing in agony in the classrooms and playgrounds.
Distraught mothers who had been attending the party stopped passing wars and taxis and rushed their children home.
Reports indicated that none of the children had suffered serious effects, although most of them were exhausted. The party was the annual Christmas treat given by the mothers’ club of the school, and the highlight of the function was a feast of sandwiches, cakes, buns and sweets prepared by the motherss. It is suspected that the cause of the poisoning was contaminated meat in some of the sandwiches.
Police visited the school later and took samples of the food for submission to the Government analyst.
