NOXIOUS WEEDS
WAIKOHU CONTROL CROWN LAND AREAS The menace of noxious weeds growing in certain sections of the county was referred to at yesterday’s meeting of the Waikohu County Council, when it was decided to ask that every effort should be made to eradicate these weeds. A letter was received from the deputy commissioner of Crown Lands, stating that it is considered that the ragwort on the Te Wera farm settlement is beyond cutting or spraying and therefore steps have been taken to control it by heavy grazing. After some discussion by the council, in which it was mentioned that the settlement was for the purpose of providing returned servicemen with farms, it was decided to reply that every effort must be made to eradicate the weeds.
The annual report of the council’s noxious weeds inspector was also received. and acting on that, it was decided that the council should write to the Commissioner of Crown Lands asking that greater efforts be made to control the spread of weeds on unoccupied Crown lands, especially the portions which were ravaged by fire last year. The engineer was also instructed to report on the growth of noxious weeds on the Tarndale and Mangatu roads and on an abandoned cottage site on the Waipaoa river road.
