OBITUARY

MR. GUSTAF MATTSON A Swedish-born resident of Napier who at one time drove coaches in the Tolaga Bay district, died recently in Napier. He was Mr Gustaf (Gus) Mattson and he was born in Jonkaping, Sweden. When he first came to New Zealand he landed at Gisborne, after coach-driving for several years, returned to the sea, which he had followed as a boy. Fie was employed bv the Richardson. Shipping Company at Port Ahuriri, and was in charge of several lighters during the days of the roadstead lightering. Later he took up coastal shipping until his retirement three years ago. He held master tickets for sailnig and river vessels. Fie was a keen member of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, being a founder of the lodge at Port Ahuriri.
