TRADE TECHNIQUE

FACILITIES ASKED COLLEGE FOR GISBORNE Proposals for the establishment of a technical college in Gisborne were recently submitted to the Minister of Labour by the local employment committee for the building industry in the Gisborne district. The proposals were embodied in a motion forwarded to Mr A. McLagan, Minister of Labour, in the following terms:— “That in the interests of industry in this district the following resolution be submitted to the head office of the Department of Labour and Employment for the attention of the Minister of Labour, namely, that a technical college be established at. Gisborne at the earliest possible date for the training of all technical and industrial occupations, particularly in view of the over-crowding of the present Gisborne High School which, although covering a few technical subjects, is, in the main, academic. The demand for such technical school exists in this area and could be coupled with the proposals for agricultural courses already expressed.” Through the district member, Mr D. W. Coleman, the Minister of Labour has advised that the motion is one more properly addressed to the Education Department. He has accordingly arranged for the Director of Employment to forward the text of the Gisborne proposals to the Director of Education for his consideration.
