LABOUR SPLIT

ROYAL ANNUITIES MINISTRY CONCERNED POSSIBLE OPPOSITION (N.Z.P.A.— Reuter—Copyright.) (10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 12. A split in the Labour Party on the amounts to be paid to Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh is causing the Government concern, says the Evening Standard’s political correspondent. The Cabinet, at a meeting next Tuesday, is expected to agree to allowances of £40,000 for the Princess and £IO,OOO for the Duke, which the select committee recommended and to ask the House to approve of them. The Conservatives will support the Government. Any Labour members who vote against the Government will be called to account, but some Labour members are expected to move for cuts. A controversial debate is expected because a minority of the Labour members on the committee opposed these recommendations, says the Parliamentary correspondent of The Times. They voted for allowances of £35,000 for Princess Elizabeth and £50,000 for the Duke; compared with the committee’s recommendations of £40,000 and £IO,OOO. Mr. Maurice Webb, chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party, was amongst the minority.
