Children’s bodies have a protective mechanism which postpones their growth when they cannot get enough to eat. , , , This is the conclusion reached by Dr. John Youmans, who directed nutrition activities for the American Army in Europe during the closing stages of World War 11. His surveys indicated that, in general, under-nourished children continue to maintain a normal weight at the expense of height. Bone development also slows down. But, warned Dr. Loumans, if the insufficiency of*food continued for too long (two years, sometimes less), permanent harm as done.
