DANGER IN FIRE

WOODEN STAIRCASES REPLACEMENT URGED (11 a.m.) SYDNEY. Nov. 25. City Council officers should make every effort to have wooden stairways replaced by concrete in city buildings, said Alderman K. S. Williams at a meeting of the council works committee.

He added that wooden staircases were the cause of the heavy deathroll in the fire in Ballantynes departmental store, Christchurch, last Tuesday. In Sydney many buildings of five to six stories had wooden staircases, he said. He recommended a survey of every city building over two storeys.
