SURGERY WRECKED

ETHER FUMES EXPLODE DOCTOR & CHILD BURNED (9 a.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 20. When an ether explosion wrecked a surgery at Herne Bay housing settlement. Dr. Alan Innes Brown and his patient, three-year-old Allan Revelle, received burns necessitating their admission to hospital. Dr. Innes Brown, whose clothes were burned off his body, is in a serious condition. suffering second-degree burns to the face, arms and legs. The child received minor burns to the head.

The explosion occurred just as another doctor was about to perform a tonsilitis operation on the child. Dr. Innes Brown was administering the anaesthetic with the aid of a “blower.” A spark from a power switch ignited the ether fumes in the-confined space. The surgery was wrecked and both doctors temporarily blinded.
