Jewish terrorists killed four British policemen and stole' £150,000 in a gun battle outside Barclay’s Bank in Tel Aviv. They dropped one sack but retained the other containing £45,000.

The British policemen were money in a tender outside the bar Diversionary Bomb Attack. The stolen money was in two sacks which were being loaded into an armoured courier car in the crowded main road. The terrorists, before the attack, exploded a diversionary bomb against the Palestinian Economic Corporation building opposite the bank. The British United Press correspondent says that three policemen manned the armoured car which went to the bank to obtain money for transfer to the Jerusalem branch. One remained in the car’s turret and trained his gun across the entrance. _ The other two went into the building and returned with a Jewish clerk dragging a heavy sack which they placed in the car. Police Surprised by Attack. When they appeared with a second sack, the terrorists approached unnoticed, shot dead the two policemen and sent the clerk crashing to the ground with a blow on the jaw. The raiders escaped in the resulting confusion. The policeman manning the turret gun gave chase. _ The terrorists, when trapped by a collision between a car and a bicycle, turned and shot down the policeman. The fourth policeman shot down was about to leave the country. He had been in the bank saying goodbye to the manager. The terrorists covering the retreat killed him as he was leaving the bank. , , . . The authorities rushed large forces of police into Tel Aviv from the nearby base at Harona. Shot Their Way Out. A witness stated that the four terrorists drove up in a jeep. There was an unusually large number of persons in the bank dressed as Arabs who were believed to be terrorists in disguise. They shot two constables who attempted to bar their way out. The jeep, as it sped from the bank, dropped one sack which was recovered. Policemen in the vicinity engaged in a running battle with the terrorists in the streets near the bank. The explosion of the diversionary bomb and grenades damaged Barclay s Bank and the surrounding buildings. A general alarm was sounded throughout Tel Aviv. , , . The police searched all cars leaving the city and checked the passengers. They detained three suspects, one of whom was wounded. The police fnink the terrorists were members of the Stern Gang. Five Jewish passers-by were wounded two seriously. It is officially stated that the sack which the raiders retained in their escape contained £45,000. Arms Dump Blows Up.

One of the largest underground arms dumps yet located in Palestine blew up with a terrific explosion in Haifa, reports the Britsih United Press correspondent occurre( j in an Arab shop. The first reports indicate that it may have belonged to the Arab underground. The shop is believed to have been used also as a factory. The police said the occupants of a car passing the shop fired into the building setting off the explosion.
