WAIROA CONCERN

HARVESTING NEARS BALING WIRE SUPPLY REQUEST TO MINISTER (S.R.) WAIROA, Sept. 27. The fact that the cutting season for lucerne is rapidly approaching and there is at present a complete absence of baling wire was viewed with grave concern by several members of the Wairoa provincial branch of Federated Farmers yesterday. Mr. T. le C. Powdrell said the first lucerne cuts would soon be made and farmers were faced with packing the product without the use of Baling wire. There was not an inch of wire to be bought in the country and. there was no prospect of any coming in, he claimed. . „ . The use of twine instead of wire was mentioned by Mr. Powdrell, and also that some machines, specially designed, used twine, but he said he had never heard of one being successful. Another difficulty was that twine was of no use to backblock settlers, due to the fact that if bales had to stand for long periods and became damp they would not carry any distance because the twine snapped. Other speakers agreed that some action should be taken so that production would not suffer. It was decided to forward a resolution to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. E. L. Cullen, pointing out the urgent need for supplies of wire being made available.
