JENNER TRIO
B.M.S. GUEST ARTISTS Three visiting musicians provided a feast of music for members of the British Music Society at the musicroom on Wednesday night when they gave a programme of excellent and fully-appreciated music. The artists were Gladys Vincent, violin; Francis Bate, violincello, and Ernest .Tenner, pianoforte. A lull complement of members filled the rooms to hear tin recital.
“Trio in B Flat Major” (The Archduke) by Beethoven, opened the programme. This trio. Opus 97, is the most important of Beethoven’s works in this form and was dedicated to his Imperial pupil, the Archduke Rudolph, hence the title. The first movement opens with a noble and -majestic subject while of file scherzo that follows, it is said that it is one of the composer's foremost contributions to this form Of the andante cantabile. Schauffler said: “It rides the air of a more astral region than any other music whatever.”
Brahm’s “Trio in C Minor, Opus 101“ followed, with four movements, allegro encrgico, presto non assai, andante grazioso and allegro molto. A powerful work, full of vigor, the work lias its quieter moments, but the brief moments of tranquility do not prevent the main character of the music from being defiant and relentless. Concluding the programme was “Trio in G Minor, Opus r 5” by Frederick Smetana. The movements were moderate assai. allegro ma non agitato, and finale. The trio was written between September and November. 1855. It is a musical reflection of the composer’s life and outlook and he prefixed the following poignant remark to the work: “In memory of my eldest child. Frederica: her exceptional musical gifts were enchanting, but her span of life was tragically cut short at the age of four and a half years.”
The conclusion of each work brought appreciative applause from the audience.
The president of the society, Mr. H. F. Wise, presented the performers to the audience. Flowers were presented to the violinist, and Mrs. Jenner was the recipient of a floral spray.
