SALE AT STORTFORD GISBORNE TOPS MARKET (S.R.) HASTINGS, Sept, 4. Beef recovered last week’s drop of £2 to £3 per head when 170 head were offered yesterday at the Stortford Lodge stock sale. The top price for ox was £26 16s paid for prime bullocks in a further Gisborne consignment on account of Mr. G. V. Smith, Waitaria. That draft also provided the top-priced heifers at £ls 18s od.

The entry contained a few top pens, but there was nothing like the quality of last, vvcck. Other prime ox made from £23 3s 6d to £25 8s (id. with medium at £2l 3s 6d and unfinished from £ls 18s 6d to £l7 3s (id. Other heavy heifers made £ls 8s 6d and unfinished from £lO Is to £l2 3s fid. Prime cows sold to £l3 13s fid and lighter from £9 18s fid to £ll Is. Where quality was offering the market for store cattle was well up to recent sales. Bullocks were traded at £l4 18s to £ls. two-off steers at £9 to £lO 10s. yearling steers £7 18s. in-calf cows £lO 10s, two-otT heifers £8 10s to £9 10s, and yearling heifers £5 10s. The yarding of store sheep has rarely been as low as that entered yesterday when only about 500 head came forward. The storm of the previous day prevented many farmers from mustering their flocks. There was little variation in the wether market, values ranging from 30s 9d to 32s 7d. with ’Downcross hoggets at 29s 3d. Low-mouthed empty ewes made 19s 4d. Values for fat ewes advanced Is to Is fid. while prices for other classes of sheep were fullv firm. The short yarding of 800 head led to keen competition with extra prime young ewes at up to 44s 7d and prime 37s 10d to 41s Kid. Heavy older ewes made 35s lOd lo 36s Id. prime 34s Id to 35s Id. and unfinished 2ls 7d to 29s id. Prime wethers were traded at 45s Id to 4fis Id. medium at 41s !od. and light down to 30s Id. Good hoggets brought 34s 4d lo 38s 4d. High Values at Burnside While extra choice pens of prime wethers hav 3 been making little over 40s and ewe mutton a few pence more than 33s at recent sales at the Matawhero saleyards. it is interesting to note the rates being paid at Burnside, Otago, on August 27. Extra prime heavy wethers were reported to have improved 2s to 3s a head to make 80s fid arid ewes showed an improvement of 4s to 5s each to sell at fils (id. There was a short entry in the fat sheep section and bidding reached the highest figures secured at Burnside for some years. In parts of the sale bidding became quite excited and it appeared to be a case of bidding to secure any lots offered. Light wethers made from 38s upwards and light ewes from 355.
