MAIZE WANTED
APPEAL TO FARMERS INCREASE IN ACREAGE MORE SMALL PATCHES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. • An appeal to farmers both pakeha and Maori to grow more maize as an important phase in increasing production in tiie aid-to-Britain campaign is made by tire Department of Agriculture.
The department stales lhat the 12,000 acres of maize aimed at this season is not a big increase on the 10,000 acres planted last year, and should not unduly tax the efforts of the regular maize grower in an endeavour to produce greater quantities of grain for marketing. In addition, if small areas of one or two acres are planted by all farmers on suitable land on the East Coast, Bay of Plenty and North Auckland districts, and the produce fed to pigs and poultry on the farms, the real aim of the programme, namely, the conservation of feed grain generally, will be realised. These small crops and maize patches could be the responsibility of boys and girls in these districts. Tire Maori people have readily accepted their part in increasing the maize areas, and if the pakeha farmers make an effort to bring under cultivation as large an area as possible by the end of September for the sowing of maize, success for the scheme will be assured.
