CALCUTTA QUIET CLASHES ELSEWHERE ARRESTS IN MYSORE (N.Z.P.A. —Reuter— Copyright.) (10 a.m.) NEW DELHI, Sept. 4. Mahatma Gandhi has ended his fast, quiet having returned to Calcutta. An earlier message said that Gandhi’s personal physician, Dr. Dinsliaw Mehta, said Gandhi was distinctly weaker than on Wednesday after a 58-hours’ fast in protest against communal rioting in Calcutta.
The police have arrested almost _ all the members of the working committee of the Mysore State Congress Party in their headquarters at Bangalore, including the president. Mr. Chengalaroya Reddi, states Reuter's correspondent. The party started a civil disobedience campaign on Monday and demanded “responsible Government.” The police also arrested some Congress leaders in Mysore, the State capital. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of a further 50 members of the Congress Party in Bangalore. The Premier of India, Mr Nehru and file Premier of Pakistan, Liaqat All Khan and other members of the Indian and Pakistan Governments, after a meeting to discuss joint action to restore peace in riot-torn Punjab, _ announced that, in the past fortnight, 500,000 people had crossed the Punjab border in either direction. The Governments were determined to establish law and order immediately. They would not recognise the illegal seizure of property, forced conversions or forced marriages. They would make every effort, to trace and recover abducted women and girls. They would appoint custodians of refugee property. Thev would investigate charges against officials of having taken part in lawless activities and would take action where the charges were proved. Air Shuttle Service While members of the Governments were discussing methods for ensuring the safe evacuation of minorities from the disturbed areas, 20 British Lancastrian aircraft are operating ail air shuttle service, flying 17,000 Pakistan Government officials from New Delhi to Karachi. It is expected the operation will be the biggest in post-war civil aviation. A Karachi message says the Pakistan Government announced that communal disorders had flared up in East Punjab. Fifteen people were killed in Peshawar, Jowshera and Abbottabad. A bazaar in the Hazara district was set on fire. Five persons were killed and 19 injured in communal disturbances today. The police and military forces opened fire six times. In Bombay three were stabbed to dc-ath in communal incidents. Eight persons were killed and 32 injured when a crowd of 4000 attacked Parkal, 20 miles from Warangal. Troops are being rushed to Parkal. The district magistrate at Kasur, a border town 35 miles south of Lahore, says that a 20-mile column of Moslem refugees, estimated at 200.000, began entering the town early today. About a Quarter of them had not reached Kasur by nightfall. The refugees, mostly on foot, came from the Sikh States of Faridkot, Patiala, Nabha and Jind in East Punjab. About 2000 of them have been wounded in Sikh attacks. Doctors met them. It was estimated that the number who died exceeded the number of wounded who arrived. A West Punjab communique says that the improved situation has been maintained, except in the Shaikhupura district where armed Sikh bands are causing trouble. Train Passengers Killed
An armed crowd which attacked the Calcutta express at Sikandarpur, about 40 miles from New Delhi, killed 20 passengers and injured 15. A Karachi message states that a Pathan sentry of the frontier constabulary ran amok near Mauripur airfield and fired 23 rounds which killed two Sikhs, two Moslems and one Hindu. The first communal incident in Karachi since the creation of Pakistan occurred today when a Sikh was stabbed to death. , , ' Four persons were killed and 47 injured in communal clashes in the old citv of Delhi today. Four cases of arson and a bomb explosion are reported at Timapur, about two miles north of the city. The Government of the North-West Frontier Province reported that raiders in a severe and prolonged action twice attacked a troop train near Kohat and killed 20 troops and wounded 94. The raiders suffered 100 casualties, including 40 killed. Seventeen people lost their lives and eight were wounded' in a communal disturbance at Takhat Bahai, near Mardan. The police arrested 40 persons. The police at Bangalore fired to disperse 2000 demonstrators in front of the central police station demanding the release of the arrested congressmen. One person was injured. The Karachi district magistrate has ordered a three-day curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. ft is the first time for many years that Karachi has had a curfew.
