NEW STAMP ISSUE
1947 HEALTH SERIES New Zealand health stamps will again be on sale on October 1 this year and the stamps have already arrived from London, where they were printed. In commenting on the stamps, the Postmaster-General. Mr F. Hackett, said that the design, which was prepared by Mr. James Barry. Wellington, had been reproduced beautifully on the stamps. Mr. Hackett explained that the de sign was based on the famous "Eros" statue in Piccadilly Circus, London, which had been erected as a memorial to the great English philanthropist, the seventh Earl of Shaftesbury. Shaftesbury was largely responsible for the early English Factory Act regulating the employment of ehildien in factories and abolishing the exploitation of child labour. The theme conveyed is not only a tribute to the great work of Shaftesbury, but is also symbolic of the more enlightened attitude today towards the welfare and health of children. It is a theme fully appropriate to a health stamps issue,” concluded the Post-master-General.
