FIELDS REDUCED P.B. OPEN TOURNEY CHAMPIONSHIP CONTEST Two rounds of match play were completed yesterday, the second day of the open tournament of the Poverty Bay Ladies' Golf Club Fine weather conditions then ruled, but a cloudy sky held a threat of less pieasant conditions tor the opening of the third 3nd final day s play today. Rain was falling during the progress' of play shortly before midday. Features of keen matches in the open championship yesterday were the first-round contest in which Mrs. R. F. Hutchinson (P. 8.) top player in the qualifying rounds, was taken to the 19th bv Mrs A. E. Smith (Wairoa), sixteenth on the list and the secondround match in which Miss O. Smith (Napier) defeated Mrs. Hutchinson, three and two. In the qualifying rounds Mrs Hutchinson’s card showed 168. compared with 188 returned by Miss Smith The day's play reduced the fields to the semi-finalists, the only home club player remaining in the open championship being Mrs. R Robb, one of the leading four in the qualifying rounds. The other three remaining in the open title contest were Miss O. Smith (Napier), Airs. D. Symmons (Whakatane), and Miss Jefferd (Hastings). Details of yesterday’s play follow. The Professional Golfers’ Association announced that Ryder Cup matches will be played?in America on November 1 and 2 at a venue which the American P.G.A. will arrange. The association added that transportation had made the choice of an earlier date impossible.
