RUATORIA HOCKEY
TEAMS CONTEST TROPHY (Herald Correspondent.) A further series of hockey matches provided keen play in Ruatoria on Saturday. Porourangi and United (B) played out to a draw, one-all. The former fielded a strong side including several fast young players, Pare Pepere and Maraea Parker being prominent in the forwards. The goal was netted by Eva Smith. For United (B) the goal was scored by Margo Williams. Hikurangi defeated United (A) by three goals to one. The former was the stronger team throughout, though this game lacked the colour of the previous contest. For Hikurangi goals were scored by F. Hana, Mrs. H. Hana and Mrs. Moeke, while United’s goal was netted by N- Kawai. The men’s teams, Porourangi and Te Aowera, contested the Pepere Cup held by Te Aowera since about 1934, when hockey was last played on a competitive scale in the district. Porourangi won by five goals to one. For the winners goals were scored by G. Haerewa (2), F. Ternaru (2), and W. Taare. Porourangi reaped a ' great deal of benefit from the play of several experienced players. K. Henderson and G. Haerewa did good work in the forwards, the latter being particularly prominent with several long solo runs of the type which led to his two goals. J. Reedy, at centre forward, was the most experienced Te Aowera player, leading the forwards and netting the team's only goal. The Te Aowera club holds the Tawhiorangi and the Kershaw Cups as well as the Hokowhitu-a-Tu Shield, which is now at Tokomaru Bay. Early in September it is hoped that the Waituhi Hockey Club will visit Ruatoria to play Te Aowera for the Hana Konewa trophy and the Hine Te Ariki Cup. ___________
