PENALTIES DECIDE
RUGBY IN WAIROA WIN TO HASTINGS SIDE GILBERT NOTED BACK (S.R.) WAIROA, Aug. 11. The Hastings Rugby Sub-Union representatives met Wairoa seniors on Saturday under ideal Rugby conditions and notched a win by 15 points to 11. The game on tew occasions reached representative standard and could not be claimed as a bright exhibition. Whilst members of both sides played well as individuals, there were few combined movements witnessed. Wairoa took the lead early in the first session and at half-time led by eight points to six, Gilbert gaining a try which Brady converted, the latter also landing a penalty goal. Herries, a penalty, and Reid, a try, were the players to gain points for the visitors. In the second spell Wairoa increased the lead to 11-6 by a second try from Gilbert, which was unconverted. A number of infringements on the part of the home fifteen enabled Edwards_ to land three penalty goals in the closing stages for the visitors, the game ending: Hastings 15, Wairoa 11. For the winners Parahi as _ hooker outshone his opponent, securing the ball whenever it was required, but his backs failed to make the best use of it. Reid and O’Connor were the best of the visiting forwards with Takon and Herries shining out in the rear division. Emanuel, for Wairoa, was the best forward on the ground, receiving good support from Smuts, Smith and Takarangi. In the back line Gilbert was excentionally good and must receive consideration for the centre position in the Hawke’s Bay team. Brady gave his usual solid exhibition, but the display of the other backs was only fair.
