OLD BOYS SUPERIOR

H. 5.0.8. JUNIORS DOWN

Playing in a junior competition match as a curtain-raiser to the collegiate game in Gisborne on Saturday, Old Bovs (A) juniors defeated H. 5.0.8. (A) by 12 points to 6. the match being hardfought and providing a good display of Rugby for the large attendance of spectators.

H. 5.0.8. set a great pace from the start and had their opponents struggling for awhile, but they lacked finish and also a bit of good fortune. More than once they were in a position that promised a score, but the roll of the nail or an interception went against them. Old Boys settled down first and gave a more seasoned performance, matching their opponents’ dash with cool defensive work and turning over to the attack as opportunity occurred. Their weight in the scrum was a big help, and the line-kicking of their backs stopped many a H. 5.0.8. rush. For the winners, IT. Tapping put over a field goal and P. Boyle scored two tries, one of which was converted by R. Phelps. H. 5.0.8. owed their points to a try by R. Lincoln, converted by C. Whitton. The game was refereed by Mr. H. Duckworth.
