RISING EXPENDITURE

UNITED NATIONS’ NEEDS (10 a.m.) NEW YORK, Aug-10. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, M. Trygve Lie, has presented a 39,403,792-dollar budget for 1948. This amount is about 11,500,000 dollars more than the estimated 1947 expenditure and does not include the cost of building on the East River headquarters site or unpredictable costs of such bodies as the Balkan and Palestine inquiry commissions. M. Lie said the increased expenditure was due to the rapid growth of the United Nations’ activities and the need for increased staff.
