PRICE OF RABBITS
WELLINGTON FIRMS FINED (P.A.j WELLINGTON. Aug. 9. A complaint that rabbits could not be secured for the market at the price fixed bv the Price Tribunal was made in the' Magistrate’s Court when a number ol retailors and wholesalers were charged with selling uncooked rabbits above the eontro'led price o' 5 Jd a pound wholesale and 71d a pound retail.
The defendants, in evidence, said that as the present price for export rabbits was 9d a pound. only reject export carcases were available for the local mar ket and wholesalers were forced to pay (I'd a pound for these and had resold I hem to retailers at ’"■ld, who in turn so'd a a higher price. The mag.strata, in entering convictions in each case with fines of £1 plus costs, said there was no evidence oi profiteering, but the regulations bad been broken. A more stringent penalty wouid be imposed if there were further cases.
An auctioneering firm was included -monc the defendants and was fined £3 ihe magistrate commenting that a more substantial sum was involved in the way of commission.
