TINNED FISH CARGO
ARRIVAL AT WELLINGTON (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 4. Cartons of salmon, sardines, pilchards and mixed tinned fish were being unloaded from the Union Steam Ship Company's chartered vessel Hartlepool, at Fryatt Quay, in Wellington yesterday. Part of a cargo of about 6000 cartons, they are the quota for Wellington Province of a large Government purchase of tinned fish from the British Admiralty. The cartons were of various sizes. About two dozen full-size tins of salmon were in ihe salmon cartons. The sardines were in large tins, approximately six dozen to the carton. Officials supervising the discharge of cargo said that it was the biggest shipment of tinned fish to reach Wellington for several years. Som,e of the cartons were stamped 1943 and had been packed in the United States.
The Hartlepool’s cargo for Wellington is part of a Dominion wide distribution scheme. It was stated yesterday that Auckland had already received its quota. The South Island’s allotment is still to come from Australia.
