WIMBLEDON PLAY AUSTRALIANS BEATEN WOMEN'S SINGLES UPSET LONDON. July 3. The Americans Kramer and Falkenburg defeated the _ Australians Long and Geoff Brown in the first semifinal of the men’s doubles at Wimbledon today. The Americans will meet the winners of tomorrow’s second semi-final between Bromwich and Pails and Sidwell and Nottram. Long and Brown found Falkenburg’s ser'ices almost unplayable early in the match, but they were brilliant overhead. However. Kramer’s service rnd low-angled returns decided the issue. Many of the games went to five or six deuces and the Australians had no luck with the vital points. There was a slight upset in the women’s singles semi-finals when Miss Hart, seeded number three, defeated Miss Brough seeded number two. Miss Brough showed more consistent speed and length in her drives and stormed the net successfully in the first set when she had Miss Hart running continually It was a different story in the next set when Miss Hart improved in accuracy and displayed beautiful backhand drives. Miss Brough, on the other hand, became inaccurate and -letned upset when footi'aulted. Miss Brough Tires Miss Brough tired in the final set while Miss Hart went trom strength to strength and clinched the match with two superb passing shots. Miss Osborne, number one seeded player, was far too strong for the South African Mrs. Summers to whom she conceded onlv three games in the other semi final. The match lasted only 25 minutes 'during which time the American's game was always a class above her opponent’s. Results: — Men's doubles. —Semi-final: Kramer and Faikenburg beat Long and Brown, 10-8, 6-4, 6-4. Women’s Singles —Semi-finals; Miss Hart beat Miss Brough, 2-6, 8-6, 64; Miss Osborne beat Mrs. Summers, 6-1, 6-2. Women s Doubles —Quarter - final: Mrs. Menzies and Mrs. Blair beat Mrs. Bolton and Mrs. Hopman, 6-3, 6-3. Mixed Doubles —Quarter-finals: L’om Brown and Miss Osborne beat Drobny and Mrs. Mathieu 6-3, 62: Bromwich and Miss Brough beat Sturgess and Mrs. Summers. 6-2. 9*7; Bergelin and Miss Hart beat Sidwell and Mrs. Hopman, 6-2. 10-8: Long and Mrs. Bolton, beat Asboth and Miss Kormoczy, 6-1, 6-2.
