ALL RUGBY OFF

TOWN AND COUNTRY PROGRAMME POSTPONED The Poverty Bay Rugby Union management committee yesterday decided to postpone all fixtures previously notified for today. -The determining factors were the condition of the Oval, the difficulty of transport on country roads, and the prospect of further heavy rainstorms in the district. The programme arranged for today was particularly interesting, with two sub-union teams—Motu and Waikohu—matched with Gisborne teams on the Oval, and the' Ngatapa subunion having a match in prospect at Patutahi. The difficulties imposed on country players in keeping these engagements would be considerable, under present weather and road conditions, and after consultation with the sub-union committees the district Union agreed that it would be in the best interests of players and public to hold over the whole day’s programme. The Oval yesterday presented a sorry picture, with water lying inches deep in some parts and covering the grass over the greater part of the playing area. To use the ground under such conditions would undoubtedly lead to damage to the turf which would take some time to repair. This factor was _ not the chief of those which determined the postpontment of matches, however.
