WAIROA NEWS

A record was created, so far as births are concerned, in Wairoa last month, when there were no fewer than 23 babies born, 15 being European and eight Maori. For the past four months 23 marriage licenses were issued and this. too. is’a record for the district. Other statistics for April were: Deaths, three European and three Maori; marriage licenses issued, seven. Two marriages were performed by the registrar. Messrs. R. J. Rothwcil, L. Lambess, r. Christie, L. Demetrell, Wellington. Mr. Hector Gray. Waikato, and Mr. T. Nicholas, Gisborne, are visiting Wairoa for the opening of the shooting season. —Mr. and Mrs. W. Poyzer have returned after a holiday visit to the South Island. Mr. Basil Prescott, of the Agricultural Department's Hsfi', Wairoa, leaves on Monday for Westport, to which centre he lias been transferred as meat inspector and manager of the abattoirs. During his stay in Wairoa Mr. Prescott has evinced a keen interest in the activities of the Rugby Referees’ Association. St. John Ambulance and the Mechanics’ Institute (the library). ' The Wairoa branch of the National Party held a most enthusiastic meeting on Thursday evening, when a large number of members was present. The officers for the incoming year will be: Chairman, Mr. W. Smith: vice-chair-man, Mr. J. Livingston: secretary and treasurer. Mr. L. P. Hamlin; with a strong working committee.
