DON’T STINT FOOD
ADEQUATE RATIONS PRODUCING COW’S NEEDS Heifers of a high potential capacity cannot develop into good producers unless they are fed adequate rations right throughout the year and an ample supply of minerals, states an American report. They should gain at least a pound and a-half per day. At the stage of milk production, continues the report, cows should not be stinted for feed. The cow can use for the production of milk only the nutrients consumed in excess of the amount needed for the maintenance of its body. For example, a good dairy cow that is well fed needs about one half of her feed merely to maintain her body. She uses the remaining half for milk production. But if she is fed scantily she will have available for production only a small fraction of the total feed eaten, as most of it, in the case of skimpy feeding, will have to go to maintaining her body.
