MID-EVENING CUTS

SUBURBS RELIEVED BALANCE OF THE WEEK TOWN ALSO TO BENEFIT Suburban residents are to be relieved. lor the balance of the current week, of the mid-evening cuts which had proved more burdensome to elec-tric-power consumers than any oi the other measures which the P.B. ElectricPower Board has had to adopt to make the necessary economies in consumption. The managing secretary of the board. Mr. R. P. Baigent, stated yesterday that owing partly to the mild weather conditions and partly to the fact that the board has a higher quota of power from national sources available this week, the board would be able to relax the mid-evening cuts in the Kaiti and West End areas, and also the early evening cut in the Mangapapa area. From last night until Sunday evening, inclusive, the consumers served by tne Kaiti feeder will not experience the 7 p.m to 8 p.m. cut. During the same period, the 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. cut in the West End will be eliminated, while the area fed by the Mangapapa line will have the early-evening cut reduced to half an hour. Normally the Mangapapa supply is interrupted between 5.30 and 6.30 p.m., but for the remainder of this week the cut will operate only between 5.30 p.m. and 6 p.m. A relaxation also is. being made, for the balance oi the week, in the morning cut in the town area. This cut usuailv lasts for two hours, but under the relaxed schedule will affect the service only between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. dailyAs from Monday, all areas will return temporarily at least to the regular schedule of cuts; but the question of further relieg will be taken up when the trend of consumption in the restricted hours can be reviewed, and the probable weather conditions for tlie remainder ot the week forecast with some degree of certainty. The board will have a lower quota of units to work upon next week, but if consumers make an earnest effort to conserve units it may be possible to repeat some part at least of this week's relaxation.
