HOTEL VISIT

LIQUOR SUPPLIED SALE OUT OF HOURS Following a visit by the police to the Turanganui Hotel about 8.40 o'clock on the night, of April 5, charges were heard against four men b.y Mr. E. L. Walton. S.M., in the Gisborne Magistrate's Court yesterday. The licensee of the hotel, Robert Bryson Watt fMr. J. G. Nolan) was charged with selling liquor cut of licensed hours, and was fined £lO and costs by the magistrate. SeniorSergeant G. S. Norris stated that, in company with Constable Elliott, he had visited the hotel on the Saturday evening and had found two men who were not guests at the hotel, drinking beer in the bar. Mr. Nolan submitted that Watt was not in the hotel at the time and had handed matters over to the barman. The two men found in the bar had pushed their way past the barman, and he had not checked up to see whether or not they were guests at the hotel. This was the first time during his 16 years as a hotel licensee that Watt had been charged with this offence. The barman, Cecil Francis Cudd (Mr. J. G. Nolan) was charged with supplying liquor outside of licensed hours and was fined £2 and costs by Mr. Walton. William Brown and Randall Charles Neels, who were both charged with being on licensed premises outside of the hours they ■ were licensed to be open, were each fined £1 and costs.
