LIFE PRISON TERM

JAPANESE GENERAL NEW GUINEA ATROCITIES CIO a.m.) RABAUL, April 23. A war crimes tribunal found Lieu-tenant-General Hataze Adachi, G.C.O. of the Eighteenth Japanese Army in New Guinea, guilty of a charge of responsibility for the atrocities committed by his troops. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. Adachi was alleged to have been responsible for a long scries of coldly deliberate. and brutal crimes against Australian and Indian soldiers, New Guinea natives and Chinese civilians. The crimes allegedly committed by his subordinates included mass murder, torture, multilation and cannibalism. Adachi is 57 years old. He will serve his sentence in the war criminals’ compound at Rabaul. Precautions will be taken to prevent his committing suicide.
