POWER BLACK-OUTS
EXCESSIVE LOAD PREMIER TO ENQUIRE INDUSTRIES' LOSSES SYDNEY, April 23. The Premier, Mr. J. McGirr, has ordered an inquiry into the failure of the Sydney County Council to maintain the electrical service yesterday, when 3.61 inches of rain fell between 3.40 a.m. and 3 p.m. The council engineers say that the wet, cold day caused a load which the power plants could not carry. When the gauge needles reached the danger point, the control engineers had to black out large areas. Power was supplied in heavily industrialised areas and the rest of Sydney was disconnected for periods up to nine hours. The deputy chairman of the Sydney County .Council, Mr. J. O. Cramer, said that if the Premier carried out his threats Bunnerong power-house and the County Council would become a plaything of the Labour Party. Factories employing 20,000 workers lost production amounting to more than £50,000 through being forced to close down. More black-outs are expected if the weather does not improve.
