LEVIN FIELDS ARE BIG, BUT FORM IS CONTRADICTORY

(HERALD Special Service)

WITH the exception of the maiden, the fields racing at the one-day Levin fixture on Saturday can he described as big. Form of a kind is offering in practically all the events, but it is so contradictory of late that it might hinder instead of helping in a final summing-up. The track at the time of writing is firm but not hard, so that it is expected that good going will be experienced, and this re view is based on it being so. Should it rain, a readjustment would be necessary, but the opportunity would not be afforded the writer.

MAIDEN RACE . The meeting opens with the Maiden Race, an event run over three-quarters of a mile. Entrants who have occupied minor places are Silver Mascot. Incision. Gay John, Chatscourt and Marcelona. the last three all haying recent seconds to their credit so it is from this trio that the favourite in all probability may come HIGHWEIGHT HCP. A bigger field claims engagement in the Highweight, run over a mile and a quarter. Racing condition is oitimes a factor in races of this description so it is questionable if Aqueduct has been up long enough. Beneve may want a race; he is being prepared for the jumping season. Theolateral, a C.J.C. Steward’s Handicap winner, is overdue, but in this class his speed may carry the day for him. Master Baron is staying on better, while Pram won three races on the Marlborough-Nelson circuit. Filature on her fourth the first day at Fielding, when she fell on her nose during the running, is indeed a possibility on that showing. Tide Area and Lackamor are now at Waipukurau. The Saddler is “iffy”, while back to form now. Prince Wanaka has not raced since the spring, but on form appeals more than the others not mentioned. APPRENTICES' HACK The Apprentices’ Hack is headed by Sailor Boy, who won the big race on Monday at Nelson so he looks the logical favourite, although seven furlongs is not as far as he would care for. Beau Son won a similar event at Tauherenikau over Easter. Blank Cheque, 8.3, looks like one that cannot help but appeal. First. Act won on Monday and of the others Audacious looks the best bet on form. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP Fifteen remain in the chief handicap of the day, the mile and a quarter £BOO President’s Handicap, with Barrage, 8.9, the virtual topweight. He is fair, but not easy to follow. Gay Lena, 8.4, ran two capital races in its last two efforts, being second both days at Feilding However, Morehu Park, who beat her the second day, was not at all impressive at Hastings sihee then. On his second to Langue D’Or at Awapuni in his last effort it looks as if Robin’s Reward, 8.2, will be one of the best backed. The Grand’s (7.10) failure at Nelson is not in his favour, while Rivcrvicw, f.B. nas only to produce the same form as when running second to Lady Christine in the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes to encourage monetary support now. However, he. for some reason, has produced His best form at Riccarton. Delinquent, 7.6, is a recent winner, but failed at Hastings last Saturday in heavy going. Flahuluk, 7.5, was a failure at Nelson on a track that was to his liking. Incline, 7.4, is passed over in favour of Ascot Lad, 7.4, who if present, may run Robin’s Reward, 8.2, very close to favouritism, Sparkling Lady 7.0. Cinna Bay, 7.0, Shcilwyn, 7.0, and Persuade, 7.0, can be classed as likely lightweights. NURSERY HANDICAP” General Victory admittedly failed at Hastings over six furlongs, but now on a firmer foothold he might do better. Distinction is a winner, while Master Fox surprised when beating Blithe Spirit at the recent Manawatu meeting. Desert Chart, from Hastings, a full sister to Morocco, has the family’s galloping ability. Dut it is doubtful if she is forward enough to get to the end of six furiongs successfully at present. Of the remaining number, Beckon, on form, appeals most. TARARUA HACK Master Raymond, topweight in the mile and a quarter hack, won at Nelson. where Just Barney also showed improved form, running a dead heat on that circuit and was second on Monday. Precedency has not much to beat and if he cannot win then he is going to be hard to place on the fiat, where he can pay his way. Blackwater is not recommended, but admittedly he is a possibility. Bulaselle won his first race the other week.' Flak would not surprise if he ran prominently. Lord Branbury and Fairhome read as well as any of the rcm cinder.

STEWARDS' HANDICAP — The Fcilding double winner Blue Bonny heads the list of those in the sprint with 9.9, or 81b. more than he won with on Easter Monday. White Cap, 8.7, is a likely sort, but, being a Gynerium, the writer is a little dubious in recommending her. Lord Theio, 8.4, back to his right distance and class, enters calculations. Lady Nahlcen, 7.12, and The Grand, 7.12, seem to be out of form. Royal Duce, 7.10, might require a race, but he has “fooled” before after a let up ‘from racing. Theiolyn, 7.9, third and fifth at Hastings, is not left out of the possibilities. King of Quiz, 7.5, is a recent winner and goes fast, while Malanui makes his first apeparance in open class and at 7.5 makes the solving of the problem none the simpler. The winner does not look like being among those further down the list, but you never can tell. W AIT ARERE~H AC K Malanui is also in the previous race, but 9.10 might frighten him into the open sprint. Back to his pet distance. Amuri might made amends for his two Hastings defeats. Beau Son is engaged earlier, but in all probability will be saddled up twice. Our Jock is passed over in favour of First Act, as also is Aristea and Sergeant Jack. Pelmeer, Audacious and Blue Pier have a little form to back up their chances on. Jinny Jinks is a recent maiden winner, while Calm Sea would only need to jump out on even terms to be very hard to lick but there is a possibility that his fractiousness at the barrier might be his undoing. Further down the list is Relampago, who has only started once this season to win.
